NEW YORK – Retail giant Ikea and its research and design lab Space10 have launched a new platform called EverydayExperiments.com to take a look into the future at how technology will redefine the way that we live.
“The future home should be about people first. It’s a place for everyone to be safe, to feel comfortable and in control,” said Fredrik Axén, Inter Ikea Systems digital manager core business franchise. “Technology is quickly becoming a vital part of the Ikea customer experience and home furnishings offer.”
The experiments focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality and spatial intelligence. The options currently showcased on the platform include an augmented reality room editor that allows people to virtually try out and reorganize new furniture and an optical sound system that allows viewers to see music visually traveling through the home, which will enable consumers to design rooms to maximize enjoyment before making investments in furniture and home theater systems.
The opportunity to play and explore with space in a virtual way before making physical changes or investments will help people to imagine new ways of using space according to Axén.
With the EverydayExperiments.com platform, the company said that design and technology studios can come together to engage, spark discussions, challenge conventions and inspire action through new collaborations developed with the intention to create a better everyday home life.
“Home, especially these days, plays an important role in how we develop our everyday interactions and relationships,” said Bas Van De Poel, Space10 creative director. “It is not only the place where we live, but (also) the place where we work, teach our children and where we connect with the world digitally. We believe, the more we learn about the next curve of design and technological innovations, the more we can help people to make tomorrow’s life at home, and with each other, even better.”
Axén said the site’s experiments are in line with Ikea’s mission to make life simpler through innovation.
