1. Commerce Department: Retail sales in serious slump    
Washington – Adding to the documentation of economic uncertainty, the U.S. Commerce Dept. today issued its advance estimate of seasonally adjusted U.S. retail and food services sales for September: $375.5 billion, a dreary drop of 1.2% from August 2008 and a fall of 1.0% from September 2007.  more  
2. Moody’s lowers Macy’s rating to ‘negative’ 
New York – Credit rater Moody’s Investors Service today lowered its outlook on Macy’s Inc. to negative from stable, and affirmed all its other ratings on Macy’s including its senior unsecured rating of Baa3.  more  
 
3. Bon-Ton ‘financially strong’    
York, Pa. – Early into its presentation at the Wachovia Consumer conference this morning, the Bon-Ton Stores was quick to “make a point” of dispelling rumors of its troubles with vendor cooperation and its financial health.  more  
4. American Textile Co. expands, promotes   
Duquesne, Pa. – While much has been said about the slumping home textiles industry, at least one domestic resource – American Textile Co. – can report real expansion as it takes stock of 2008.  more  
5. Waverly debuts Tidewater for Williamsburg fabrics  
Williamsburg, Va. – Williamsburg and Waverly together have launched the new Tidewater decorative fabric collection, presented by P/K Lifestyles, a P.Kaufmann division.  more  
6. IFDA forming Japan chapter  
King of Prussia, Pa. – The pending Japan chapter of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) recently held its first meeting, in Osaka, with almost 90 designers and colleagues attending.  more
