1. LNT decides to pull the plug
Wilmington, Del. — Even for those who saw it coming, there is a sting to this morning’s federal bankruptcy court request by Linens ’n Things’ to shutter its remaining 371 stores beginning the middle of this month.  more  
2. September comps positive but under goal
New York – Retailers’ same-store sales finished the September period with a fifth consecutive week of slowing, evident across all channels and categories, and setting the stage for a new round of promotional pricing, the Johnson Redbook reported today.  more  
 
3. Birkins out at WestPoint    
New York – Art Birkins, svp, global supply chain management for WestPoint Home, is no longer with the company. The position has been eliminated.  more  
4. Swirbul leaves post, will consult at Chris Stone  
Vernon, Calif. – Jay Swirbul has stepped down as vp, sales and marketing at decorative and upholstery fabric resource Chris Stone, a post he has held since June. He assumed the vp position after the departure of Mark Aizawa, president, and Andrea Bernstein, creative director, at that time.  more  
5.  Cost Plus celebrating 50 years in business  
Oakland, Calif. – Home furnishings specialty retailer Cost Plus World Market is beating the drum for its 50th anniversary, which dates from the first San Francisco store opening on Oct. 23, 1958.  more  
6. Fred’s downtrends softlines, trims Q3 outlook  
New York – With its “Refresher” program yielding positive results, neighborhood general merchandiser Fred’s Inc. will continue de-emphasizing softlines goods, even as it fights for margin dollars in a tough market.  more  
7. Karastan factory gains ISO 14001 certification  
Dalton, Ga. – Upscale area rug manufacturer and supplier Karastan, a division of Mohawk Home, has a new “green” feather in its cap: its manufacturing plant in Eden, N.C. is now ISO 14001 certified with the International Organization for Standardization.  more  
8. Group president Barron to leave TJX   
Framingham, Mass. -- Arnold Barron, senior evp and group president of TJX, has advised the off-price retailer of his intention to retire on Jan. 31, 2009.  more  
9. Mohawk mourns loss of sales manager Mechsner   
Sugar Valley, Ga. – Mohawk Home has lost one of its longtime sales staffers to cancer.  more
