1. Gottschalks gets lift from hard home goods  
Fresno, Calif. – Housewares took center stage in Gottschalks’ newly refocused home business, but textiles took a back seat in sales during the western regional department store chain’s second quarter.  more  
2. Belk ups profit on lower sales   
Charlotte, N.C. – By tightening inventory and controlling other costs, southern regional department store operator Belk, Inc. boosted second-quarter profits to $8.2 million, a 9.3% rise from the year-ago period.  more  
 
3. Stein Mart cuts back soft home 
Jacksonville, Fla. – Home – mostly linens – was among the weakest categories for Stein Mart during its second quarter, giving the mid-tier off-price department store cause to narrow its inventories and in-store square footage at some of its stores going forward.  more  
4. Store closings hinder Fred’s earnings  
Memphis, Tenn. – Charges for closing dozens of underperforming stores pushed Fred’s second-quarter profits down 66% to $1 million, or 3 cents per share.  more  
5. Deal off to sell shuttered Unifi plant  
Greensboro, N.C. – In a filing with the SEC, Polyester and nylon textured yarn producer Unifi reported that Reliance Industries USA was terminating its agreement to buy the Unifi Kinston manufacturing plant.  more
