1. Middle-market retailers sag in July comps  
New York – Evidence mounted that consumers are focused on the necessities – meaning that back-to-school shopping for fashion goods will be sluggish – as retailers dependent upon softlines suffered while commodity-based merchants thrived in July.  more  
2. Soft-Tex moves to new manufacturing facility   
Waterford, N.Y. – After 10 months of planning, basic bedding supplier Soft-Tex Manufacturing, has moved to a new 125,000-square-foot factory here.  more  
 
3. Vivatex to debut at September Market     
New York – Vivatex will make its first market showing next month at 295 Fifth Ave., Suite 713.  more  
4. Filene’s Basement gains ground   
Columbus, Ohio – Off-price retailer Filene’s Basement has posted increasingly strong sales this year, with second quarter volume up 22.3% to $102.6 million, and a modest comp-store gain of 1.4%.  more  
5. Polymer Group doubles net earnings   
Charlotte, N.C. – Engineered materials supplier Polymer Group (PGI) has benefited in 2008 by building up capacity, passing along raw material cost increases, and widening sales efforts.  more  
6. New exhibitors swell roster at 7W NY   
New York – During the New York International Gift Fair/Home Textiles Market Week (Aug. 15-21), buyers will find several new exhibitors in the showrooms at 7 W New York (7 W. 34 St.), including:  more  
7. New York Markets Clarification
New York Home Textiles Market Week takes place in conjunction with the New York International Gift Fair. It will run Aug. 16-21 at the Javits Center, Piers, Metropolitan Pavilion and 230 5th Avenue; and Aug. 15-21 at 7 W. 34th St.  more
