1. May comps start strong   
New York – Retailers tapped pent-up demand as mild weather at last opened the door to seasonal sales, sending first-week comparative-store sales up 2.0%, the Johnson Redbook reported today.  more  
2. Losses trimmed as WestPoint sales fall 
New York – A 42% decline in sales for the first quarter was driven in part by “the discontinuation of unprofitable bed and bath” programs by WestPoint Home, the home fashion division of Icahn Enterprises, said Icahn president Peter Shea on the first-quarter earnings call today.  more  
 
3. Home ‘under pressure’ at Wal-Mart 
Bentonville, Ark. – As consumers turned their attention toward basic necessities, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. today reported solid sales and earnings gains for the first quarter, with earnings per share up nearly 12% to 76 cents.  more  
4. Profits up 19.6%, TJX on a global roll   
Framingham, Mass. – TJX Companies’ self-described “cash engine” and “what is fueling our growth” – The Marmaxx Group, comprising T.J.Maxx and Marshalls – was the brightest star in a period that boasted many benefits, the company reported during its first-quarter call today.  more  
5. Laneve explains Bloomie’s catalog strategy 
New York – Although Bloomingdale’s will discontinue its Bloomingdale’s by Mail catalog early next year in favor of its internet efforts, it will continue with “bHome” in home furnishings, “HOT” in apparel and a array of other store traffic-drivers.  more  
6. LNT sales flat, comps off, delays quarterly filing  
Clinton, N.J. – Linens ’n Things today reported a 5.7% comp decline on first-quarter sales that were essentially flat.  more  
7. World Market plans permanent hospitality showrooms 
Las Vegas – Manufacturers serving the hospitality industry can move in year-round with the introduction of Hospitality at Las Vegas Design Center, set to open in 2009 as part of the World Market Center.  more
