1. Profits halved, JCPenney aims at ‘better’ zone  
Plano, Texas – An array of new brands, most leaning to the “better” side of the price point table, is marching into JCPenney during June and July to help the 1,074-unit mid-tier department store chain recruit a wealthier and younger customer into its stores, the retailer said during its first-quarter earnings call today.  more  
2. Bed Bath & Beyond to enter Mexico in j.v.  
Union, N.J. – Specialty retailer Bed Bath & Beyond has formed a joint venture with privately held Mexican home goods retailer Home & More, S.A. de C.V.  more  
 
3. WestPoint owner Icahn mounts proxy battle for Yahoo!  
New York – Financier Carl Icahn has acquired a large stake in Yahoo! Inc. and today offered his own slate of 10 director nominees, including himself, to replace the Yahoo! board of directors; the election is planned for the Yahoo! shareholders meeting, set for July 3.  more  
4. Unifi recycled fiber process to be televised  
Greensboro, N.C. – Fiber and yarn producer Unifi, Inc.’s 100% recycled yarn Repreve will be featured on “How It’s Made,” a TV series produced by the parent company of the Discovery Channel.  more  
5. Mohawk Select, Karastan opening Vegas space  
Dalton, Ga. – Mohawk Industries’ sister soft flooring divisions – Mohawk Select and Karastan – have together opened a joint permanent showroom in Las Vegas at the World Market Center.  more
