1. April comps end shy of goal    
New York – Retailers finished the February-March-April quarter with a third straight below-goal gain in comparable-store sales, with the April comp gain of 1.6% coming in below the target of 1.8%, the Johnson Redbook reported today.  more  
2. Chase to pay $3.6 billion for Target receivables
Minneapolis – Upscale discounter Target will get a big cash injection of $3.6 billion by selling about half of its credit card receivables to JPMorgan Chase, in the type of deal it was encouraged to explore by activist shareholder William Ackman last summer.  more  
 
3. LNT affirms court’s interim approval of DIP financing 
Clifton, N.J. -- Struggling specialty chain Linens ’n Things confirmed that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware had approved its “first-day” motions, including interim approval for access to the $700 million debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing.  more  
4. Stein Mart names Katz to marketing post  
Jacksonville, Fla. – Softlines retailer Stein Mart has named Glori Katz svp, marketing and advertising.  more  
5. Duckwall-ALCO cuts HQ staff by 10%  
Abilene, Kan. – Rural general merchandiser Duckwall-ALCO Stores is cutting its headquarters staff by 10%, part of its continuing cost-control campaign.  more  
6. Textillery promotes pink as leading 2009 hue  
Bloomington, Ind. – Fashion throw producer Textillery Weavers is trumpeting the virtues of pink, as head designer Judith Rose prepares a range of pink and pink-combination looks for 2009 retail availability.  more
