1. Soft home, national brands downtrend at Kohl’s
Milwaukee – The home category is at the bottom of the heap at Kohl’s in terms of performance.  more  
2. JCP sees tax rebate benefit for back-to-school 
New York – The income tax rebate checks set to start rolling out in May and through July will have a modest effect – but one that JCPenney is likely to take good advantage of during back-to-school, said Mike Ullman, chairman and ceo of JCPenney this morning at the Lehman Brothers 11th Annual Retail and Restaurant Conference.  more  
 
3. Big Lots big Fishman slams home textiles sameness  
Columbus, Ohio – Observing a “lack of innovation and creativity” coming from the soft home industry, Big Lots chairman, ceo and president Steve Fishman said his company is turning its home category focus toward the stronger furniture side of the business, at least for now.  more  
4. Home missing out in Wal-Mart gains  
New York – While Wal-Mart is happy with its recent results in most merchandising categories, the home department stands alone as trailing the performance of the big retailer’s “leading competitor.”  more  
5. Valdese Weavers names Earles, Walters to new posts  
Valdese, N.C. – Jason Earles has been named to the new position of vp sales and marketing for Circa 1801, a division of Valdese Weavers. Earles succeeds John Lenox, president of Circa 1801 for many years, who has left the company.  more  
6. Cutting down catalogs to aid standalone HSN  
New York – “HSN continued to exhibit strong momentum,” said Barry Diller, chairman and ceo of Home Shopping Network parent company IAC regarding results for the first quarter ended March 31.  more  
7. Sears Holdings readies big-ticket shipping center   
Hoffman Estates, Ill. – The $51 billion retailer Sears Holdings is opening a one-million-square-foot direct delivery center in Gouldsboro, Pa.  more
