1. March leaves most retailers in retreat 
New York – Why not start with some good news? Ross Stores had such a good first quarter, the 918-unit off-price retailer raised its first-quarter earnings guidance. As did the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart. For each, business in March was good. For the rest of retail, not so much.  more  
2.  Bed Bath & Beyond barely bullish   
Union, N.J. – Coming off a reasonably good fiscal 2007, Bed Bath & Beyond is bracing itself for “continued pressure” on its gross margin in 2008 due to increased prices in raw materials and sourced goods, as well as stepped-up customer coupon redemptions, the company said in remarks to analysts late yesterday.  more  
 
3. Positive traction at turnaround-bent Pier 1   
Forth Worth, Texas – Pier 1 Imports this morning reported its first profitable quarter in three years as well as its first positive comp performance since 2003.  more  
4. Sales, profits slide at Tuesday Morning 
Dallas – Home furnishings closeout retailer Tuesday Morning saw third quarter (ended March 31) net sales drop 5.7% to $178.4 million compared to $189.2 million a year ago, and said it expects to record diluted earnings per share as a loss of 10 cents to 12 cents, compared to a gain of three cents for the year-ago period.  more  
5. Revman to debut Antiques Roadshow quilt collection  
New York – Revman International will produce a collection of Antiques Roadshow branded quilts under license by public television station WGBH Boston, the program’s producer.  more  
6. Iconix Brand Group promotes three 
New York – Lifestyle brand management company Iconix Brand Group, which owns the former Pillowtex brands Cannon, Charisma, Fieldcrest and Royal Velvet, has promoted three execs.  more  
7. Dollar General shuffles execs  
Goodlettsville, Tenn. – As part of ongoing strategic initiatives, neighborhood discounter Dollar General has shifted the responsibilities of president David Bere, and has announced the resignation of two executives.  more
