1. Williams-Sonoma braces for ‘most difficult’ 2008  
San Francisco – As the 2008 retail year gets underway, Williams-Sonoma Inc. is bracing for what it predicts as “one of the most difficult,” if not “the worst” economic periods in memory, by arming itself with new and enhanced product categories and shopping-level marketing initiatives, the upscale home furnishings retailer said today during its fourth-quarter and yearend earnings call.  more  
2. Fred’s profits clipped as softlines sales slip 
Memphis, Tenn. – Home and apparel were singled out specifically as categories that experienced an increase in promotional activity at neighborhood retailer Fred’s Inc., the company said during its fourth-quarter and yearend earnings call today.  more  
 
3.  Briggs leaves Dan River for consulting post   
New York – Dan River Home is bidding farewell to president Herb Briggs, who is leaving to join an investment firm, while interim management of Dan River will be under the continued guidance of Kevin Jareck, svp sales and marketing, and Bruce Nichol, svp product development and design.  more  
4. RVI steadies comps after shedding Value City  
Columbus, Ohio – Multi-format merchandiser Retail Ventures Inc. posted 2007 sales of $3.04 billion, down 0.8% from 2006 – and shaved a bit by the fact that the company disposed of its Value City discount store division on Jan. 22, 11 days shy of the full fiscal year.  more
