Markets compete for buyer attendance

First, suppliers complained about the changed New York market dates, saying Febraury is too cold, August is too hot.

It didn’t take them long to find another issue to whine about — overlapping markets in the winter and summer seasons.

No one can really blame some buyers for opting out of attending every single market, especially in the summer when they might prefer to take time off to be with their kids or go vacation.

But by the same token, no one can blame suppliers fior feeling pressured to present themselves at so many venues, lest they miss that one great opportunity.

So what about you? Are you planning to attend more or less markets, or just convinced a tall stiff drink by the pool is the solution?

Stop complaining already! I keep hearing that these market dates don't work, but I think most are only concerned with vacation time. The gift industry has hosted summer market weeks for decades and no one complains about the timing. If August and February do not work, what dates do work? October was a waste of time -- the only reason to attend to introduce GMM's to the vendor community. All of the real work was completed prior to market and most showroom conversation were a recap of what was placed. At least now, there is a chance to impact the season at market week. Besides, NY is great in the summer time. Try dining al fresco while you are in town. There are wonderful street cafes and hidden gardens to dine in . . . you just need to get away from Times Square to find the wonderful summer spots that NY has to offer. As fro February, we have always had a February Market official or unofficial. Toy Fair is forever held in February and again the gift show is late January. These are the businesses which have been dependent upon imports far longer than Home Textiles . . . the dates make sense for import businesses. most buyers have their season booked prior to April and October. In fact prior to the date changes most buyers were previewing October market in June and July! Wake up and smell the imports!
