Just a quick note between the final meeting of the day and this evening’s dinner appointment.
January 12, 2007

Third day of the show. Traffic began slowing down in the afternoon, which is typical. Heard some complaints in Hall 10 today about the cost of exhibiting. A couple mills are contemplating pulling out. However, as one noted, “When you complain, they say: ‘Go ahead and leave. We’ve got a lot of companies on the waiting list.’ “

Elsewhere, a few expressions of concern from U.S. folks working the show about the U.S. folks who opted not to come this year. Biggest question: Is it a blip or the beginning of a trend?

Also got some questions en route from one place to the next about New York Home Fashions Week in February. (That would refer to what was formerly known as Market Week, the showroom-based event. The New York Home Textiles Show, formerly the Javits-based event, now takes place in January at the Metropolitan Pavilion. Confused? You’ve got plenty of company.)

Anyway, showroom guys and gals are worried that some retailers won’t show so soon after Heimtextil. One told me six accounts of his accounts aren’t doing the Market, although he said they might change their mind at the last minute. Another supplier said his catalog customers are PO’ed that market week and the New York Home Textiles Show have been separated. Catalogers, he said, are 1) confused about which is which; and 2) seemingly split about which one they’re going to attend and which one they’re going to skip.

I guess we’ll all find out in a few weeks.
