Look, don’t touch.
September 27, 2007
Do you like the looks of Kmart’s new Abbey Hill private label bedding line? Well, if you don’t want to break the spell, then don’t touch!
Members of the press and industry were treated to a behind-the-velvet-rope preview in Manhattan’s Astor Place Kmart store this week.
The retailer has unveiled a visually well thought out assortment. Abbey Hill is meeting at least two home textiles challenges for Kmart: merchandising to the traditional-taste customers, and providing a margin-improving opportunity by using a non-branded house line to fill the price zone at or below the Martha Stewart Everyday program.
The only catch is a tactile one. For example, on a spot lit bed ensemble, the Abbey Hill duvet and sheet set was well coordinated in fairly rich if restrained, traditional hues. The texture, though, mumbled something less luxurious. The sheeting had a starchy hand, and the duvet cover was actually rough.
Maybe Kmart can sell more of these ensembles if they keep the velvet rope up.
