The little things
August 21, 2007
Ahh, the little #*!&^@#^!%+* things.
Coming back to the work cycle after a serene vacation, calls for special alertness to those little stress points that nibble away at one’s peace of mind.
Let’s try to keep those deep and easy breaths coming. Not worrying about mundane things – like why Windows won’t let you simplify about 135 common, everyday functions – will keep your mind alert to the big things, such as how the Martha Stewart brand will play out in its new role as soft home brand anchor at the nation’s largest department store chain.
Not letting your blood pressure peak over some little thing like how those damn stockbrokers are trying to ruin your modest stash of “disposable income” will help you navigate the big things, like whether the great deals on designer Nate Berkus’ goods at Linens ’n Things means his three-year stint there will end in December. For that matter, whither LNT itself?
The Chinese tax rate, the Indian rupee exchange rate, the tight supply of truly organic cotton, the Wal-Mart approach to brand strategy in home textiles, the market impact of accelerating soft home merchandising by TJX, Ross Stores and Big Lots – these are the big things.
The little things – like a string of 59-degree August afternoons in New York City – have a way of distracting you from the big things. Hmm, wait a minute: maybe climate change is a big thing. You tell me. I’ll be taking deep breaths, over by the doorway to Bloomie’s lower level, just off the half-flooded subway platform.
