Gold Coast lights way for throws

By Cecile B. Corral -- Home Textiles Today, 4/23/2001

NEW YORK — Using its years of experience as a gift product manufacturer, Gold Coast, which only recently also became a decorative pillow and throw manufacturer, has developed its new marketing tactic designed to make its throws fly off shelves during fourth quarter.

The trick? Add some candles.

Gold Coast is working closely with its retail partners to produce a new gift set for Holiday 2001 that includes a throw and two candles for $10.

The gift set will come in a hard box with an acetate lid, a stretch ribbon and some festive decoration, "but decorated in such a way that the product doesn't become a markdown December 26," explained Steven Gordon, executive vp.

Gordon said that the gift set can be done with any of the company's current line of throws — fleece, rayon, cotton, poly-cotton and embellished.

"It did very well at April market," Gordon said. "We offered it to everyone who came in."

Gordon said that other ideas for gift sets include a travel bag that unzips down the middle and contains a collection of plastic lotion bottles on one side and a throw on the other side.

"In the home textiles business, the key is to have the flexibility to be able to provide this kind of innovative product," Gordon said, "and we have that flexibility. It's promotional and it serves many purposes. Not just Christmas, but Mother's Day, and other holidays."
