New York – Same-stores sales during the first week of the month rose 1.7% compared to the same week last year and climbed 4.3% compared to October, the Johnson Rebook reported today.
As cooler temperatures propelled sales of seasonal apparel and weather-driven goods, discounters had an especially strong week, their comps jumping 4.0%. Department stores saw a decline of 1.9% for the week ended Nov. 7.
Redbook is projecting overall comps will fall 0.9% for the month, with discounters generating a 3.8% gain and department stores an 8.2% drop.
Although November is typically a transitional month as retailers prepare for the holiday season, Redbook analyst Catlin Levis noted: “Some stores are already in a rush to cut prices and extend store hours in an effort to create a ‘Black Friday’ everyday.”
