Jo-Ann Stores sees net sales rise 6% in 3Q

Hudson, Ohio – During the third quarter, Jo-Ann Stores’ sales rose 6.0% to $509.1 million, the fabric and crafts retailer reported today.

Same-store sales for the quarter, ended October 31increased 4.3% compared with a 1.5% same-store sales decrease in the 2008 third quarter.

Store traffic was up by 4.9%, but average ticket saw a slight decline of 0.6%.

Jo-Ann Stores offered a break down of net sales and comps by store format. Sales at its 228 large-format stores jumped 8.7% to $272.0 million, and same-store sales rose 2.3% compared to a decrease of 3.8% in 2008’s third quarter.

Sales at its 530 small-format stores climbed 3.0% to $228.5 million, and same-store sales increased 6.7% compared with an increase of 1.2% for the same period last year.

Internet sales at www.Joann.com increased 6.2% to $8.6 million.

The company said it continued to experience strength in the majority of its fabric and sewing notions merchandise categories, resulting in a sewing same-store sales increase of 8.1%. Non-sewing same-store sales also increased, but more modestly at 0.1% due to growth in core craft merchandise categories offset by continued weakness in seasonal and custom framing merchandise categories.

Year to date, net sales hit $1.39 billion, up 4.5%. Same-store sales increased 2.5% compared with a 1.9% increase for the same period last year.
