American Textile expands Aller-Ease Cotton line

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 3/12/2001

PITTSBURGH -Responding to several retail customers' requests and needs, American Textile Co. has expanded its Aller-Ease Cotton fabric line.

At the spring market, the Pittsburgh-based company will introduce Aller-Ease Cotton Top mattress and featherbed protectors. The new products will feature 100 percent Aller-Ease Cotton allergen barrier fabric on the top of the mattress and featherbed protectors. The sides and backs will be made of polypropylene.

"Our mission as a company is to listen to our customers' needs and to react with desirable product extensions," said Jack Ouellette, president and ceo of American Textile, about the decision to expand the company's Aller-Ease line. "Aller-Ease Cotton pillow protectors have been such a tremendous success that product extensions seemed inevitable."

Aller-Ease Cotton, which is offered exclusively by American Textile, is a 100 percent cotton allergen barrier bedding. It is specially woven to allow moisture vapor and air to flow through the fabric, according to the company. The pores, however, are too small to allow dust mites to penetrate.

A twin mattress or featherbed protector will have a suggested retail price of $29.99, and a king will be offered at $59.99. All-over allergen barrier cotton products are also made by American Textile but carry a slightly higher price point of $59.99 retail for a twin.

"By using the cotton top and the polypropylene sides, we can hit some price points that are more attractive for the consumer," Ouellette said about the construction. He added that the company was aiming for placement at the mass merchant level but felt the product could also be offered at the specialty retail and department store levels.

Both the mattress and featherbed covers have been independently lab tested, Ouellette said, to assure customers of their protective properties. No chemical additives have been used either, he added, "so it really is completely hypo-allergenic, and that's important to us."
