Cost Plus celebrating 50 years in business

Oakland, Calif. – Home furnishings specialty retailer Cost Plus World Market is beating the drum for its 50th anniversary, which dates from the first San Francisco store opening on Oct. 23, 1958.
Celebration events at stores will include live entertainment, product giveaways, food and drink samplings, winemaker bottle signings, henna painting, celebrity chefs and live remote broadcasts.
Consumers in the Bay Area can enter the “Go THERE from Here” Bali Spa Sweepstakes, built around the Cost Plus THERE line of luxury bath products. The grand prize is a spa vacation in Bali, Indonesia.
A second prizewinner will receive the most iconic of Cost Plus prizes: the store’s hallmark Papasan Chair, filled with about $500 worth of World Market goodies.
On the charity front, Cost Plus will donate a portion of its net proceeds from the flagship San Francisco store during the anniversary weekend to San Francisco and Oakland schools, the company said.
Founded on Fisherman’s Wharf by local businessman William Amthor, Cost Plus has grown its original “out-of-the-crate” rattan furniture and basket trade into a national chain of nearly 300 stores.
