Tomchin Displays Art at Fromm Institute

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 5/19/2008

San Francisco —"I finally had a chance to draw," proclaimed Julian Tomchin, the now-retired home fashions guru for Bloomingdale's, Macy's West and Fieldcrest.

His first exhibit at The Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning in San Francisco at the University of San Francisco features art inspired by the Japanese techniques by which students learn calligraphy. After decades of spotting trends in home, setting up retail floors and executing the details, Tomchin said, "I'm having a very good time with this. I'm using rice paper over children's construction paper." As for his debut exhibition, Tomchin said, "I made the invitation look like those at Parke-Bernet," referring to the iconic Manhattan art gallery.
