Lenzing Debuts Botanic Concept

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 1/28/2008

Lenzing, Austria — The new buzz word from fiber producer Lenzing is "Botanic."

Earlier this month, the company debuted the concept at Heimtextil in introducing Lenzing Modal Loft for the towel sector. The new fiber variant improves both the softness and bulking force of towels while enhancing absorbency, said the company.

Modal is made from beechwood (a soil enhancer) and valuable byproducts extracted during the production process include acetic acid, water and sodium sulfate, useful in the production of glass.

Lenzing is applying the Botanic label as well to its Tencel brand of cellulose fiber. Tencel is made from eucalyptus, a rapid regenerator grown on specialized farms where there is no use of artificial irrigation, gene manipulation or pesticides. Water use in the processing of Tencel is 100% lower than that tapped in the production of cotton, according to the company.

Both Modal and Tencel are biodegradable.
