Bed Bath & Beyond Welcomes Clodagh

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 12/3/2007

New York — Bed Bath & Beyond this week launches Clodagh for Homestead fashion bedding in 75 stores and on the internet.

The collection of four beds in her Conscious Living theme marks the celebrated Irish-born designer's entry into branded mainstream home furnishings. She has long been noted for her architectural and product design work within the interior designer and hospitality segments of the home furnishings business.

In creating the collection, Clodagh told HTT, "The covers are made of really sturdy material, as well as sexy and organic. The bed is a gathering place for families."

In developing the program with Homestead there were two key criteria: "We insisted on organic fabrics and factories that are fair trade." The dyestuffs are the only part of the collection that are not totally environmentally friendly, she added.

As for her designs, she related, "Sir Terence Conran is a hero for me in the way he brought good taste to the public." As part of her growing home furnishings business, Clodagh said, "I would like to do public appearances and I'm working out a plan."

The four bed ensembles are named White Clay, Red Earth, Deep Sea and Irish Moss.

The duvet covers and shams are made of 100% organic cotton with a Sustainable Textile Certificate; the decorative pillows are made with mostly natural fibers. The packaging and labeling has been designed to carry further the sustainable thrust with the packaging made of non-toxic and recyclable PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate). The package inserts are made of recycled paper, while the handle is cotton that is biodegradable and compostable.

Price points for the duvet covers are $149 to $179, $49 to $59 for shams and $44 for decorative pillows. There also are highly textured throws in the collection. Coming up next year will be sheets and towels.
