Vijaeswari Textiles Introduces Gossamer Cotton

Coimbatore, India — Vijaeswari Textiles Limited (VTX) has created a new label, Gossamer Cotton, for a line of bedding products made from hand-picked and selected cotton buds.

“Gossamer Cotton is the technique of handling the cotton,” said Jayanthi Ramachandra, joint managing director. “It's not very mechanical. It needs expertise.”

VTX's parent company has specialized in spinning extra long staple threads since 1948, and Gossamer Cotton is the result of years of research. It also relies on a hybrid variety named Suvin, which was created by the Central Institute for Cotton Research in Coimbatore.

The buds used in the technique have been allowed an extended growing period and are processed at a slow speed to yield fibers that are 25% longer than standard extra long staple cotton and 30% finer than the best Egyptian cotton. The density of the fibers lends the resulting woven fabric the luster of silk.

“It can hold up to any embroidery,” Ramachandra said.

VTX is positioning Gossamer Cotton as “an ingredient brand” like Supima. The company has created three bedding ensembles under the Gossamer Cotton label.

Genoa consists of a 600-count jacquard duvet cover, a coverlet and a 1,000-thread sheet. Nidhra is a solid color jacquard duvet paired with a silk coverlet to demonstrate the relative luster. Julhua features an embroidered duvet and a cuffed sheet.
