Target drops store names

By Andrea Lillo -- Home Textiles Today, 2/5/2001

MINNEAPOLIS -The chapter is closing on two old names in the retailing industry.

It was announced by the department store division of Target, known as Dayton's, Marshall Field's, Hudson's, that the Dayton's and Hudson's names will be dropped and converted to the Marshall Field's name by the end of the year.

"We selected the Marshall Field's name because it is well known worldwide and represents our largest business," said Linda Ahlers, president.

Hudson's started as a haberdashery in Detroit in 1881. Dayton Dry Goods began business in 1903 in Minneapolis.

In 1969, they merged to create Dayton Hudson Corp., making it the 14th largest retailer in the country at the time.

In 1990, Dayton Hudson purchased Marshall Field & Company, which began in 1852 in Chicago.

Dayton's currently operates 19 stores in the Upper Midwest, and Hudson's has 21 stores in Michigan.
