Calvin Collections Spring to Life

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 10/18/2004

New York Six new beds using a variety of subtle fabric constructions were added to Calvin Klein Collection and four to the Khaki Collection for spring 2005.

In Collection, Rustic Metallic offers an unusual effect with a trio of panels woven vertically across the bed and highlighted with subtle touches of Lurex yarn. The hemp, camel and twine shades of the duvet cover are repeated in the sheeting, shams, blankets and pillows. The shams feature silk organza printed with silver leaf over a cotton lining.

Mesh Web uses an abstract print in soft pearl grays with touches of sage as the duvet cover moving to accessories like the sham — nylon and cotton embroidered with a large flower and Mesh Quilt, constructed with an open-weave fabric layered over gauze and quilted.

Floral and crackle motifs highlight Sculpted, a washed matelasse duvet in a tinted pink with a crinkle matelasse coverlet and a floral embroidered sham.

Moso Leaves features handpainted bamboo leaves and delicate floral buds in an asymmetric that act as the border, moving into a center textural ground in endive, artichoke and citron. Silk with embroidered stripes over a cotton lining is the sham and the quilt is cotton voile banded with textured cotton.

Printed lightweight cotton voile is accented with stitch-like details, inspired by Japanese tie-dye techniques for the duvet cover, while Rustic Metallic uses a printed silver leaf silk organza over a cotton lining for the shams to echo the metallic accents in the duvet cover.

The Khaki Collection is more casual and straightforward in color with color blocks, bold stripes and an abstract paisley as the design themes.

The Khaki color palette includes putty, celery, orange-red, yellow, papaya and sea green.

The Collection bath line has added three jacquard towels: Rustic, a two-toned yarn-dyed border with subtle silver accents; Sculpted, a pink tint shade with modern graphic flowers as the jacquard border and Stitch-Dye, a solid border with a running stitch accent.

While describing business as “tough,” Rudy Schmatz of Calvin Klein noted, “October has had a bright light start. But the year is hard to track because the event and calendar dates don't line up with last year.”

Collection is in nearly 300 doors, Schmatz reported, a number that will hold, rather than expand. Khaki will be in close to 600 doors by year end, he added.

Looking ahead, Schmatz said the Lush and Core towels will sport new colors in the spring market, and Tailored Band, the 400 count sheet, will have new colors and packaging.
