Waites Ditches Neutrals With Vintage

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 10/11/2004

From The New York Market —A light, fresh, colorful look is the signature for the Vintage Collection of bedding and window coverings designed by Raymond Waites at Next Creations.

Moving away from neutrals across all the home furnishings product areas in Vintage to a colorful but not flamboyant palette, Waites uses design inspiration from Chinoiserie and Asian influences to classic stripes — many with unique dressmaker details.

In Vintage, Waites treated a solid-color duvet with a colored insert and frog closings down the bed in six combinations. Kyoto, a polyester/silk comforter is featured at $200 for the queen set in a lavish embroidery which also will be available as decorative fabrics from Swavelle/Mill Creek, Waites fabric licensee. And Fortuna, a red top-of-bed print is mated to candy-stripe sheets.

Whisper, a coverlet with a box edge, is shown with a brushed 300-count cotton sateen sheet with pleated hem in six colors.

At the same time, Waites introduces the Metropolitan Chic Collection that harks back to the '60s for its influences. Fabrics in this bedding collection are bolder in mood than Vintage.

Zen, reflecting an urban chic mood, uses a tribal swirl pattern. Isabelle is an updated mid-century interpretation of a classic tulip floral, while Azure reflects its glamorous heritage with exaggerated eyelash embellishments in a contemporary statement. Ethnic, influenced by retro design, is highlighted in Sinatra.

Hampton Stripe comes in nine colors as a fiber-reactive print on a 310-count cotton sheet, offered in duvet covers and comforters.

Prices for Vintage beds range from $200 to $400 for the queen set. The brushed cotton sateen sheet is $70 for the queen.

Metropolitan Chic price points range from a queen duvet cover at $100 to a $300 comforter set.
