Olsen line: All but the kitchen sink

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 8/30/2004

NEW YORK — The initial Sigrid Olsen Home Collection — licensed to W-C Designs — will consist of six bed ensembles; a complete bath program of towels, shower curtains and bath rugs; table linens including placemats, runners, and tablecloths; as well as one design in dinnerware.

Olsen, who began her career as a textiles designer, moved into the apparel business first with a sportswear line 20 years ago, then into casual resort wear, and currently into lifestyle apparel collections.

Olsen is a brand and division in the 30-plus brands of Liz Claiborne, Inc.

"My dream has been to be more involved in the home area," Olsen related. "I'm bringing art into everyday living with my signature use of color, print and design."

As Patrick McCullagh, president of W-C explained, "Her textile talent interested and excited us. She was a weaver originally, and her collection reflects her origins."

The initial collection, which will be distributed through the department store channel, will be previewed in a dedicated showroom in 295 Fifth Ave. during the February 2005 mini-market.

Discussing Olsen's style, McCullagh remarked, "She combines the beauty of nature with the artful interpretation of products to address the needs of modern homes. She has signature colors, distinct prints and modern shapes that are sparing in feel."

For the beds, Olsen explained each uses a solid and a print or a jacquard and a print for the duvet cover/comforter. Colors range from earthy ethnic to seawater shades; natural linen with pale pink and white. Each bed is designed like a collection of clothing. Overall, she noted, "It is an artisan look with elements like hand stitched details, batik influences and leafy motifs."

The bath collection will feature solid-color towels in 12 shades.

Anaheim, Calif.-based W-C markets its products under brands such as Waterford Linens, Wedgwood Linens and Wilton Court.
