Quaker consolidates

FALL RIVER, MASS. — Quaker Fabrics will consolidate the activities of four or five of its different facilities to a new building it is acquiring here which will be used for yarn manufacturing and warehousing, said Larry Liebenow, president and CEO. Quaker plans to quadruple its yarn production specifically in novelty yarns, he added.
In addition to the $21 million cost of the 600,000-square-foot industrial building, Quaker will spend about $3.1 million for automated warehousing equipment. The company anticipates savings of about $3 million in operating costs beginning with the second half of 2005. With the move, Quaker will have 2.4 million square feet of manufacturing and warehousing space, compared with 2.1 million square feet currently, Liebenow added.
The building Quaker plans to occupy was built to house the Main Street Fabrics division of Joan Fabrics. Main Street discontinued operations earlier this year.
