NEW YORK — Design students from Rhode Island School of Design and Philadelphia University won scholarships last week from the Joseph Beyda Creative Foundation, named in honor of the former Town & Country Linen president.
A total of 23 entries were received from four schools including Alberta College of Art and Design, and Savannah College.
This year's contest asked students to design a "hotel lobby" in the location of their choice. Students were instructed to create three full-color designs — a hard surface item and two soft items — for furnishings to be submitted on two storyboards.
They also had to include a room rendering, a short essay explaining how the designs reflect the hotel's location, and a textural treatment for one of the two soft-surface items.
Scholarship winners were: Abby Lichtman of Rhode Island School of Design, who won the $3,000 first-place prize; Jessica Soper of Philadelphia University, who won the $1,000 second-place prize; and Cheryl Betzina and Grace Durnford of Rhode Island School of Design, who each won $500 third-place prizes.
Receiving Certificates of Merit were Kelly Chaido of Philadelphia University and Rebecca Davison of Savannah College of Art and Design.
