BBB joins the competition on hot Manhattan corner

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 5/3/2004

NEW YORK — Superstore Bed Bath & Beyond will open a third Manhattan location some time this summer in a luxury apartment building that is going up on Broadway, directly across the street from the Lincoln Center cultural complex.

The new store will be the chain's first on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a densely-populated and family-friendly area that is now among the city's hottest, and most affluent, neighborhoods.

The move also puts Bed Bath & Beyond at the epicenter of a new home fashions hot spot in Manhattan, just two blocks away from Broadway veterans Gracious Home and Pottery Barn, both at West 67th Street and Broadway.

For several years, the chain has been searching for an appropriate site on the Upper West Side, but was stymied until deciding on the new location. The site is just a block off from one of Manhattan's ultra-luxury Gold Coasts — Central Park West — and a five-minute stroll from the ritzy high-rises of Central Park South.

In another key consideration, the building is only a block from the Broadway line subway station, giving West Side consumers easy access.

The location also gives the retailer easy access to other significant neighborhood customer bases, including the students of the Juilliard School, who live in a high-rise dormitory across the street, and the more than 5,000 residents who live in the massive Lincoln Towers complex of eight high-rise apartment buildings.
