Tommy Hilfiger falls into color

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 3/29/2004

At the New York Market — More color and embellishment, both reflective of the influence from the designer’s apparel lines, are key elements in the Tommy Hilfiger Home Collection for fall.

At the same time, several of the designs, especially in the upper-end Crest bedding collection, show the influence of traditional motifs with a contemporary flavor.

Hillsborough uses a giant scaled 18th century damask, engineered for the top of the bed in olive, sand and angora. The sheeting is an overall damask in tones of sand, and details include a tiny flange on the edge of the comforter. Decorative pillows are covered in velvet and Euro shams, and the bed skirts are engineered bands of chocolate brown and angora.

Pacific Heights features a paisley with Jacobean tree-of-life influences in velvet and sateen and stronger, bolder colors — emerald, topaz, garnet and sapphire — than is typical of the Hilfiger palette. The sheets are a subtle herringbone in rich reds.

The third new Crest bed, Horseplay, takes a different approach with its equestrian lifestyle inspiration. A large houndstooth is the top-of-bed design print on cotton sateen.

Accessories carry out the equestrian theme with wool felt, suede, buckles and double-needle stitching used throughout. The color palette mixes pale blue and navy with three shades of camel.

Sheets in Crest are 400-count cotton.

Crest beds are $249.99 for the queen comforters; $229.99 for duvet and $69.99 for the sheets.

In Collection, a younger, more casual design approach is taken with signature colorful Hilfiger stripes from the men’s shirting collection setting the pace.

The yarn-dyed striped duvet covers will be the thrust of the summer/fall advertising campaign, said Harry Kartus, vice president, sales and merchandising, following the high-impact campaign of the stripes in men’s shirts now underway. The sets begin at $79.99 twin.

In the same vein, four new colors — olive, red, pink and blue — have been added to the chino collection.

Printed sheet sets in the $24.99 twin opening price point have been designed to work with the chinos and yarn-dyed stripes under the umbrella of Tommy Hilfiger Mix, Kartus related.

In the bed ensembles for Collection, Holly is a black and white bed with flocked outline florals against a white ground, “‘60s inspired,” Kartus remarked. The sheets are striped and Euro shams have pintuck detailing.

Appleyard is a modern take on country, Kartus said, with reds, pinks and blues the color theme. An unusual element is a duvet cover — a sheer argyle design.

Calypso features a sparkle, sequin mix of embellishments on a paisley in dark and light blues. An unusual element in Calypso is the solid-color satin duvet cover.

Collection beds are $129 for the twin; $179 for the queen, with sheets priced at $14.99. The chino and denim twins are $79.99.

Four colors have been added to the towel line — redwood, sunset gold, brown and Pacific blue — bringing the total to 18. Paisley motifs in small, medium and large scale — in hot colors — play off the solid-color towel palette. New faux skin bath accessories also play off the towel colors.
