The colors of Maison & Objet

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 2/9/2004

PARIS — It was a contradiction in color at Maison & Objet here last month. On one hand lots of color, especially in the red to orange family in fabrics and bed and bath. On the other hand, a serene abundance of neutrals and naturals, especially at the very upper end of the bedding market.

Oranges and reds were clear favorites in the color derby, but a softer palette is coming on — almost sweet and feminine in feeling. And black and white are important fashion statements throughout the home.

Dozens of reds — from clear brights to influences on purples and oranges that ranged from citrus to coppery tones — were prevalent.

Hot pinks, brilliant blues and summery yellows also were key color players in the red and orange arena.

Color also was influenced by iridescence, pearlescence and metallic softenings of the some of the strongest color statements.

Stripes and paisleys were key design motifs in decorative fabrics and spread their influence across all home segments — home textiles, tabletop, lighting, rugs and furniture.

Natural linens and silks prevailed as fabric favorites in all product categories.

It was a blanket and throw year among the home textiles categories, with lots of new weaves, deep dimensional effects and a move upward into more decorative design. Such changes were taking place at the higher end, where simplicity has long been the benchmark.

The new segment dedicated to high-end decorative fabrics drew more than 30 exhibitors in a small area that created a major traffic jam with customers and lookers alike.

Rugs once again were significant in their design statements, with many contemporary, creative innovations.
