Colors at the core for hot times in High Point

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 10/13/2003

HIGH POINT, NC — Home textiles suppliers showing here this week at the International Home Furnishings Market will put a lot of emphasis on color, unique weaves and fabric treatments in top of the bed collections and lots of decorative pillows.

Warm, rich colors, including amber, warm pinks, peach tinged melon and periwinkle, are seen as pepping up the home textiles color palette that has been dominated by naturals and neutrals.

Similarly, fabrics are lighter and fresher — moving away from the heavy chenille of recent markets to silks, rewoven wovens and luxury silks, mohairs and cashmeres.

And yet others like Adam Tager, new co-owner of Mystic Valley Traders, are expanding their product mix.

Still others like DJC are offering limited editions of specific product to ensure their customers an exclusive style.

Thief River Linen has joined with Jill Rosenwald, "a young potter who works with Tyndale and Toyo" for a collection of decorative pillows, said Linda Bentson, president.

More elegant, Bentson said, is a silk and cashmere duvet cover backed with silk charmeuse. In window coverings, Thief River is featuring a trapunto trimmed velvet and a periwinkle sheer. Important colors, Bentson said, are "peachy melon, tones of burgundy and burnt orange, and light, fresh limey greens."

At Paper White, there will be five collections of silk top of the bed with cotton sheets ranging from 400- to-800 count. Colors will focus on the warm side, said Jan Dutton, owner, with amber and reds joining ivory.

At Mystic Valley, two custom and three quick ship bedding programs will be featured, said Adam Tager, co-owner off the company that he and his twin brother bought earlier this year.

To enhance the custom program, the company has added down duvet and bed pillow fillers, using only gray duck down, Tager explained.

In bedding, the company kept true to its signature looks while adding new directions like At the Ritz, a black and white design with red accents, and Romantica, a vibrant red quilt.

At Eastern Accents, "we have less of the heavy chenille looks and more in the growing mountain/Southwest look and reds and pinks in all shades," said Karen Jacobson, director of sales and marketing.

The company's Feathersound business has a distinctly different direction, she noted — "cleaner, more subtle, and textural vs. more pattern and print. It's American, not European, contemporary with colors including neutrals to retro black and white, cheeky pink and red."

For DJC, a pair of limited edition chenille throws will star, said owner Diane Jackson Cole. The throws, hand crafted in a ruby and claret textured twill weave, are part of an effort to introduce more special items for their customers.

In the Ernest Hemingway collection, Palmetto, a loop mohair and boucle throw with glass bead trim is part of a luxury statement, she said.

Textillery Weavers will feature an expanded Greek Column collection at market, said Judith Rose, head designer, "with more stylistic variations." Honeydew and khaki, a mix of greens and khaki and tobacco are the key colors, she added.
