By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 9/22/2003

AT THE NEW YORK MARKET — Target Stores and Crate & Barrel ceo Gordon Segal are among the winners of this year's National Design Award presented by the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Target will receive the Corporate Achievement Award for its emphasis on good design and aesthetics. "Target has democratized design and made a major impact on the education of the American public about its daily benefits," according to a release from the Smithsonian.

Segal will receive the Design Patron Award for his support of numerous charitable and design-related causes as well as the retail company's commitment to good design. "Insisting on the highest design standards, Segal established a talented architectural department within his company, and their designs have won several awards from the American Institute of Architects and the Chicago Athenaeum," according to the Smithsonian.

Additional honorees will include I.M. Pei, and Lella and Massimo Vignelli. Several notable fashion designers, environmental designers, product designers, communications designers and architects are finalists for awards in their field to be announced during the gala event Oct. 22 at the National Design Museum in Manhattan.
