Students' creativity cited in awards

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 5/12/2003

NEW YORK Design students from three colleges last week won scholarships from the Joseph Beyda Creative Foundation.

The foundation, named after the former Town & Country president, invites students to enter an annual design competition that requires them to submit entries for a particular project. This year's contest required students to design a bed & breakfast in the location of their choice — set in the year 2050. Each entrant was instructed to provide two storyboards, one hard surface design and two designs for soft surface products.

The program received 50 entries from five institutions: Syracuse University, Rhode Island School of Design, William Patterson University, Philadelphia University and Savannah School of Art & Design.

Judges included design consultants Patricia Bouley, Bouley Design; Caroline Woolley, cwoolleyco ; and Thomas Steinbruck, fashion and trend consultant for BMW Group and chair of fashion, merchandising, textiles and design, Albright College.

The winners were:

First place ($3,000): Philip Charles Iosca, Rhode Island School of Design.

Second place ($1,000): Hae Won Shin, Rhode Island School of Design.

Third place (two awards of $500 each): Megan Atler, Syracuse University; and Amber Crosser, Philadelphia University.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Elizabeth Schultz, Syracuse University; and Kai Feng Den, Savannah School of Art & Design.
