Canning Vale looking to U.S. high end

By Andrea Lillo -- Home Textiles Today, 4/28/2003

PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Although it's no stranger to these shores, towel manufacturer Canning Vale Weaving Mills was a first-time exhibitor at the New York Home Textiles Show. And, after gaining the bath towel license from Joseph Abboud last October, its booth also provided a launch of that line.

Already a player in the United States for five years, where it exports about 15 percent of its business, Canning felt it could achieve better exposure at the show, especially at the upper end of the market, said Judith Hamilton, project administrator.

"The higher-end market is where our product fits in the best," she said. "We can do more specialized products" — which it already does for several specialty and department stores in the U.S.

Canning manufactures its line here and services the U.S. with a DC in California. The company also exports some business to New Zealand and Europe.

U.S. sales have leveled off recently, Hamilton said, but the company hoped the new Abboud line would help. The five initial Joseph Abboud bath introductions were on display at the show.

The company also showed its Allure towel, which was in zero-twist cotton solid and jacquard designs.
