Hollander strengthens sourcing, boosts quality

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 4/28/2003

BOCA RATON, FL — Hollander Home Fashions, long known for its strength in jacquards, has put more muscle into its sourcing efforts, a move that has allowed it to add more exotic fabrics and cut & sew techniques to its adult bedding line.

As a result, it has boosted the quality quotient in each of its step-up collections, and launched the new Hampton Collection, which targets the consumer moving into her first apartment.

"It's a need we felt needed to be addressed," said Sandy McNeil, president, fashion bedding division. "And now we've found the right source to bring it to market."

The debut is offered as comforter sets only, although McNeil said Hollander will probably add sheeting in Hampton's second showing.

Retails will be $149 queen for the core Hampton Collection, where comforters construction is 65 poly/35 cotton, and $199 for Hampton Luxe, which uses silk and silk-like poly fabrics on the comforters.

The Hampton introduction included three patterns. Modern Geometry offers periwinkle and navy squares on a clean white ground with an engineered box quilt pattern offsetting the design, along with sequin and embroidered details. Tea Rose is a soft sage and green mitered comforter with an engineered quilt pattern that offsets the diamond motif center. Autumn Flower presents embroidered bouquets of wildflowers in berry, antique blush and rosewood with olive leaves surrounded by mocha corduroy.

Hampton Luxe also bowed with three beds. Shanghai is a 100 percent shantung silk, down-filled quilt in a warm sage. Mulberry Patch is a poly yarn-dye fashion-forward patchwork quilt. Verve presents a tailored and pleated poly duvet in shimmering textures of bordeaux, rose, celery, taupe and bronze.

Hollander's sourcing work has spilled over to existing collections, as well. Specs in the Nob Hill Collection, which retails at $149 for a queen comforter set and $199 for a queen all-in-the-bag, have been boosted to meet the larger sizing previously available only in the Park Avenue collection, which retails at $249 for a queen comforter set and $299 for a queen all-in-the-bag.

"Looks that would be in Park Avenue are now in Nob Hill," McNeil said. "We're not lowering price points; we're raising the bar in existing price points."

Nob Hill's 230 cotton sateen sheets can accommodate an 18" mattress, and a richer texture has been loaded into the top of bed designs.

Similarly, Park Avenue is employing better fabrications. The Consuelo pattern consists of a paisley-inspired diamond medallion in a foulard layout, colored in curry and spice tones and accentuated by a decorative bronze trim with a sueded miter in bordeaux.

The impact of Hollander's sourcing initiatives is most fully expressed in the company's top of the line Vendome Collection, where retails range from $329 to $349 for all-in-the-bag sets and $249 to $299 for a mini-duvet set.

Embroiders, fabrication and dressmaker details characterize the four-bed collection. French Willow, an all-cotton organdy lined with voile, offers embroidered willows on a French vanilla ground and a chainstitched embroidered comforter.
