Calvin extends reach with bath rugs

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 10/28/2002

NEW YORK — Calvin Klein Home is extending bath offerings under its Collection brand with a new line of bath rugs.

The line includes sculpted designs and sheered/pile combinations that coordinate back to the solid-color jacquard towel program. The rugs blend cut and looped yarns for texture and debut in two color groups. Neutrals include sage, parchment, sepia and oyster. The vivid palette includes plum, berry and hibiscus.

The line is made by Nourison, which also produces the Calvin Klein area rug program launched in January. Rugs are available in two sizes — 20" x 30" and 27" x 45"— and start at $75.

Calvin Klein Home also is adding lotion pumps to its bath accessories assortments to round out offerings. Although the pumps will be offered at "a popular price point," said chairman Rudy Schmatz, "we're not driven by price and we won't sacrifice quality."

In bedding, the designer label introduced a solid-color program of duvets and shams, which grew out of an earlier fashion bedding piece called Fragmented Pucker. The printed technique uses a combination of vat dyes and a process that eliminates some of the fibers in the material to create the puckered pattern.

Overall, Schmatz said, the Collection line of bed and bath business "is pretty well developed in stores." The plan going forward is to broaden the assortment within existing doors.

The more upper-moderate Khaki line still has the potential to grow doors more significantly, particularly in bedding, he said. "The market to grow in bedding is cleaner; it's not as price-driven as the bath business," he added.

In the Collection line, Calvin Klein Home highlighted three percale beds.

Meadow Grass features washes of pale plums, soft greys and dusty yellows, with two bands of soft-focus florals bordering either end of the duvet. Two sheeting options are available: a watercolor stripe percale in magnesium or a double row cord solid percale in driftwood. The bed is layered with a washed matelassé coverlet in washed blue and a "Trapped Threads" Euro sham of silk organza stitched to a ground of 80 percent wool/20 percent nylon.

Painted Plaid uses printed abstract lines to form a textured pattern in spicy tones of raisin, maize and sienna. Sheeting options include Desert Strips percale in maize and double row cord solid percale in raisin. The blanket is an all-cotton basketweave in sienna, with a 92 percent silk/8 percent cotton throw backed in wool.

Black and White is a nuanced graphic, with a white cotton yarn dye duvet and shams with single lines of marled yarn scooting across the face of the fabric. Sheet options are a yarn-dye edged chambray in black or a double row cord solid percale in white. The blanket options include a sateen rib matelassé in white or a basketweave blanket in white.

In the Khaki line, Calvin Klein Home is going forward with two beds.

Adobe Leaf is a larger scale graphic floral print in almond against a rich field of berry and orange tones. Sheeting options are texture printed percale sheet in almond or a Khaki solid percale in currant. As an alternate top, a pebble texture duvet and sham are available in a yarn-dye percale in nickeline and pyrite shades. The bed is layered with an all-cotton, ribbed-borders quilt in nickeline as well as a textured plaid cotton blanket in almond. Decorative pillows include a 100 percent abaca in nickeline or burnt orange and the all-cotton Quilted Squares in rose.

Sumatra Plaid emphasizes modern plaids and linear motifs in a cotton yarn-dye duvet and shams in faded browns, indigo and plum. Sheeting options include a textured percale in glimmer or a Khaki solid percale in eggplant. As an alternate top, a pebble texture duvet and sham are available in a yarn-dye percale in glimmer and sea shades. The quilt component is a ribbed border quilt in eggplant. The coordinating blanket is a cotton textured plaid in mahogany. Dec pillows include an abaca in umber or indigo and all-cotton Quilted Squares in indigo.
