Mumm's the word for new Saturday Knight bath designs

By Cecile B. Corral -- Home Textiles Today, 7/22/2002

CINCINNATI — After a soft launch in April, bath products supplier Saturday Knight Ltd. and licensed artist Debbie Mumm are increasing the scope of their partnership this October by doubling their offerings to encompass six designs of bath coordinates.

"It's turned out to be a very strong line for us," Dianne Weidman, vp of sales and design for Saturday Knight, based here, told Home Textiles Today. "Debbie Mumm really has the right designs to contribute to our line, and she's got some nice art that we can really interpret into product."

This summer the initial line is set to hit the shelves of two major department and specialty stores. The three new designs are currently under development and will be officially introduced to customers at the next New York Home Textiles Market.

Each design collection is comprised of bath towel ensembles, a shower curtain, resin hooks, a rug and bath accessories — toothbrush holder, tumbler, lotion pump, soap dish, tissue box and waste basket.

Each of the three new designs represents a different price point, based on the varied constructions.

At the top of the line is Lavender Quilt, which includes 100 percent Egyptian cotton towels with embroidery and striped dobby borders, 100 percent cotton embroidered bath rugs, resin bath accessories and 100 percent cotton duck shower curtains, which are set to retail for $39.99.

The mid-level design is Shelly's Seashore, which includes 100 percent Egyptian cotton towels with embroidery and striped dobby borders, 100 percent nylon printed bath rugs, resin accessories and 70 percent polyester/30 percent cotton shower curtains — the latter set to retail for $29.99.

Oh Happy Day Frogs carries the lowest price point for its four-color-process vinyl shower curtain, $12.99. It also includes 100 percent cotton embroidered towels, printed cotton bath rugs and shaped resin accessories in the forms of frogs, butterflies and flowers.

Most of Saturday Knight's Debbie Mumm line is imported. Only the towels, tissue boxes and waste baskets for Oh Happy Day Frogs and the shower curtains for Lavender Quilt and Shelly's Seashore are made domestically by Saturday Knight.

For Saturday Knight, Debbie Mumm represents the company's fourth licensing partnership. Artists Robin Betterley and Christian Lassen are among the others.

"We really feel that it's important not just to have a name to a license but to also work with artists whose designs really warrant something to the consumer," Weidman added.
