Calvin Klein grows bedding 'Collection'

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 10/22/2001

AT THE NEW YORK MARKET — Layered Voile, a pieced and stitched voile top-of bed ensemble, is one of the five new Collection beds introduced for spring at Calvin Klein Home.

The unusual fabrication mixes with existing cotton sateen sheets, a coverlet, Tanzanite Band, a silk/satin/organza pillow and Floating Mohair throw. The duvet is $500 queen, $250 coverlet and $200 for the throw.

Aquamarine Weave, a woven yarn dye top-of-bed at $250 queen, pairs with Stripe Gauze Print, a printed sheet, and Clear Solid Sheeting, a solid-color percale, both at $70 queen, and accessories including a marled grid throw, a basketweave blanket and pillows including a metal sheer mesh fabric. Color gradations highlight Graphite Squares, a duvet where the color and the size of the squares change as the design moves down the bed, at $350 queen. The sateen top sheet features shaded bandings at $135 queen and is matched to a graphite fitted sheet, a graphite matelasse coverlet and a mesh fabric over sateen for pillows.

Antique Flower uses a solid-color sheet and coordinated print with Wide Stripes, a matelasse bed cover, a cotton/wool Pastel Block throw and pillows of pearlized faux leather.

White Vines features a yarn-dyed sheet using heathered yarns, a printed percale Sakura and Vine Plaid plaid blanket and Marled Grid as a throw.

Collection also features a new towel, Sewn Line, a jacquard in three colors at $20, as well as two new colors — smoky aubergine and sheer amethyst.

The new Khaki collection features three new beds. Cambium Lines, a woven duvet mixes with Cambium Flower, a khaki blanket and copper and natural pillows at $169.99 for the queen duvet.

Dakar Plaid, a woven duvet, features the company's new softer fabric hand, with a woven sheet and a quilt that moves from a box motif to lines, and a solid-color blanket.

Mizu is an engineered duvet with a tossed flower print and clear jade as the solid sheet. The blanket uses light and dark blues accented with abaca pillows in rhubarb.

The Khaki towel collection has been increased to 14 colors, up from 12 and, originally, 10. The $12.99 towel color line has been reworked "to set it more apart from Collection towels," said Barbara Deichman, senior vp, home. New colors are blood orange, indigo and sugared violet.

New Khaki bath accessories are offered in Glacier Glass.

In basic bedding, Collection is introducing two novelty items: Pet Bed, a hypoallergenic, natural feather fill with a 230-count cotton logo print inner shell that comes in two sizes, retailing for $95 and $12; and the Body Pillow, a down and fiber blend, hypoallergenic, with a 230-count cotton logo print inner shell that retails at $125.

In Khaki, Lilac Flower is offered as a pillow and comforter, both natural fill, with a 230-count cotton shell using a soft lilac floral print. Khaki comforter in plum is a natural down, 550 fill power, hypoallergenic using a windowpane pattern in three solid colors at $200 twin. The Heather comforter with 525 fill power and Heather pillow of fiberfill are offered in moss and ice.

The door count for Collection, said Rudy Schmatz, president of Design Works and Calvin Klein Home, will "be at midpoint between 300 and 400 by yearend with about 12 more definite next year." Khaki doors will be more than 300 either by yearend or just after the first of the year including a 16-door rollout for Filene's, Boston now under way, he added. Next year, he envisions up to 50 more doors for Khaki as well as "a continual upgrading of existing doors."

In addition, Calvin Klein Home will open in Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and Bon Marché stores, all in Paris, and in the new Calvin Klein store in Dallas that opens in March or April and includes a 5,000-square-foot home section, Deichman said.
