New York - Warmer springtime weather breezed in as May got started, taking comps up 2.8% in the month's first week, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
For the week ended May 11, same-store sales in the discount channel rose 3.3% while comps in the department store segment were up 1.9%.
Redbook analyst Catlin Levis said sales of seasonal goods began improving as warmer temperatures arrived in certain parts of the country, especially in the Northeast.
"Retail business also reflected Mother's Day and school graduations with sales such as flowers, cards, small appliances and jewelry," she continued. "The impact of Mother's Day was boosted by the calendar, as Mother's Day falls a week earlier this year than last year, making comparisons easier in the first week of May."
Comparisons, however, are likely to be more difficult in the second week, Levis warned.
