Lexington, N.C. - This year marks the centennial anniversary of the Timberlake family's involvement in the home furnishings business spanning three generations.
Today, consumers know it as the Bob Timberlake brand, anchored by the namesake realist painter and designer, whose works are interpreted on a broad assortment furniture pieces, area and accent rugs, lighting, and art/wall hangings.
The roots of the business date back to 1913, when Timberlake's grandfather - Edgar Anderson Timberlake - founded and later incorporated the Piedmont Furniture Company here. The business was expanded into to include other divisions, including Piedmont Funeral Home (based on the hand-crafted wood caskets sold at the furniture store) and later, in 1948, the Piedmont Gas Service.
After graduating from college, Bob Timberlake became involved in his family's five businesses, and eventually turned his focus to the furniture side.
Over his 43-year art career, Timberlake has spent the past 22-plus translating his works onto furniture and home furnishings, decorative accessories, home plans and apparel to create his lifestyle brand.
The result of that is Bob Timberlake Inc., a licensing company that acts as the manager and agent of the Bob Timberlake brand. Current licensees include Shaw Living for all rugs.
