NPD looks at textiles sales during the holidays

Port Washington, N.Y. - Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season in the textiles world isn't just about table linens and tree skirts.
According to NPD Group, bed products account for 63% of textiles dollar sales during the season. Sheet sets, bed-in-a-bag, and electric blankets are the top selling categories.
In addition, most people are shopping for themselves. Only 12% of holiday textiles are purchased with the guest room in mind, NPD reported. Just 19% of all table linen dollars come from purchases intended to be used during the holiday season.

"Consumers see the opportunity to spruce up and impress holiday guests with minimal expense through home textiles," said Debra Mednick, executive director of The NPD Group's home business.

Consumers shopping for textile products during the holidays focus on three criteria: how the product looks, price/promotion, and the material/texture.

"Christmas and Hanukkah were the only holidays to see an increase in textiles sales, thanks to a 36% increase in average selling price. Splurging on products with a more luxurious look and feel can go a long way in getting the home ready for the holidays, or giving just the right gift," said Mednick.
