Sourcing is going to be the biggest challenge in days to come.Sourcing does not only mean getting goods at the lowest price but getting goods on time and of the desired quality.Overall merchandising activity / understanding of the product and process has gone down , thus its getting difficult for the importers/retailers to source goods correctly despite having liasion office or representatives being at the country of origin. The focus will now be on finding correct people who can get the work done for them.
Tahseen Ahmed - 2012-09-12 02:44:23 EDTMr.Mukherjee/ Warren,
The trend of the big retailers to open sourcing offices in Asia has been there for past several years. You are right, this may become more prevalent in an effort to squeeze out any more (if any!) "fat" in the supply chain.
However, the role of the importers to handle the mid-tier retailers or other customers cannot be ignored. We are the ones who make the production and financial commitment to bring goods in to port/crossdock or warehouse. I firmly believe this will continue to be a mixed bag and a symbiotic balance will need to be maintained for all 3 sides of the retail distribution here.

On Warren's point about sourcing , I feel that it is time that large Retailers in USA establish their own Buying Offices / Quality Assurance cells in countries which contribute large chunks of their sourcing pie. This will give them " an ear on the ground " insight on where to focus more . This needs to be treated like a Capex investment rather than a cost vs revenue spend.
