Atlanta Rug Market opens with steady traffic

Atlanta --- Today is Day 1 of the International Area Rug Market here at the AmericasMart, and vendors are happy to see steady traffic streaming into their showrooms.
Some news from around the market:
--At Surya, this was especially true. The Calhoun, Ga.-based company's sixth-floor showroom in Building 1 was a full house. Seth King, vp of sales and marketing, attributes the attention to the company's broad offering of new designs and constructions.
At the forefront is Surya's expanded offering of on-trend flatweave rugs, a program that now numbers upwards of 200 looks.
"It used to be more Southwestern-oriented. But flatweaves are now more modern, and have a broader appeal," King said. Prices, too, are competitive at $399 to $499 - depending on the pattern and brand - for a 5-by-8.
King added: "All of our license partners are offering flatweave looks this market because they've become so popular."
These include B. Smith, Candice Olson, Smithsonian, Jill Rosenwald, and Country Living as well as Surya's own house collection.
--HGTV celebrity interior decorator and designer Genevieve Gorder is credited with building and updating Troy, N.C.-based Capel Rugs' flatweave rug assortment for market.
Said to have drawn at least part of her inspiration from her ancestral homeland of Croatia, Gorder created a collection of flatweave rugs in two-tone palettes that pair a sandy white with a bright color - blue, green, read, saffron - or instead a stark neutral - like pigeon or light gray.
--At Shaw Living, achieving 48 colors out of only eight base colors has positioned the spotlight on the new Mirabella collection. This globally-inspired grouping makes a statement with its bold color story first, then its design. In total, there are 66 unique rugs that employ a new ombre dyeing technique "which has enabled more distinguished and diverse color coordination options," the company said. "But most importantly, the ombre dyeing technique produces a color palette that is more colorful, vibrant, and dimensional than ever seen before in machine woven rugs."
--Now located in a more central and visible showroom space on the sixth floor at the AmericasMart this market is Anderson, S.C.-based Orian Rugs. With its new space, the company shifted its presentation to a distribution-specific focus, explained Mikala Moller, director of marketing.
She said Orian has created the new Gallery program - encompassing 10 new and existing rug collections - to target regional and furniture/specialty retailers, which represent a new target customer base for the company.
The 10 collections, which employ a "more refined construction and design" versus the company's Orian line for big-box retailers, include: Summit; Tribeca; Carolina Wild; Wild One; Wild Weave; American Heirloom; Anthology; Four Seasons; Uptown; and Stria.
