Big Lots' home business poised to be key in Q4

Home Textiles Today Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 12/2/2011 2:25:04 PM

Columbus, Ohio - Home is showing promise at Big Lots, with the category's comp up in the low single digits during the recent third quarter.

During the 1,445-unit chain's earnings call this morning, chairman, ceo and president Steve Fishman singled home out as "an important part of Q4."

Furniture comps for the quarter were also up in the low single digits, driven by sales of mattresses and fireplaces.

"We've strategized to grow this business for the holiday selling season, and I continue to believe furniture is one of our biggest growth categories over the next several quarters and years," Fishman said.

Still, consumables are increasingly becoming a core business, and Big Lots' assortment has steadily become broader.

Home and furniture are also becoming a focal point in the company's recently acquired 85-unit Canadian operation, Big Lots Canada, where both categories along with seasonal and toys are getting "positive customer feedback."
