York, Pa. - The Bon-Ton Stores announced Bud Bergren, president and ceo, is planning to retire from day-to-day operations and will become chairman of the board once the company has hired a successor.
Executive chairman Tim Grumbacher will step down from that role but remain on the board once Bergren makes the transition.
Bergren has held his current position since August 2004. He had been president and ceo of Elder-Beerman Stores, which was acquired by Bon-Ton in November 2003. Prior to Elder-Beerman, he held several positions at Belk Stores.
"Until we appoint the new chief executive officer, I will be focused on and actively engaged in the continued roll-out of our strategic initiatives and the strengthening of the operations of our company," said Bergren.
Bon-Ton Stores operates 276 department stores under the Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, Younkers and Parisian nameplates.
