Labor Day sales boost comps

New York - Consumers turned out for Labor Day promotions, pushing same-store sales for the first week of September up 4.9%, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
With Back-to-School and seasonal goods leading the way, the discount channel's comps rose 5.2%, while the department store segment logged at 3.2% increase.
"Some retailers are nearing the end of their back-to-school calendars, while others expect its impetus to last through the month in part due to the hurricane, which delayed back-to-school and some discretionary shopping on the east coast," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
She noted that some retailers are getting an early jump on Halloween and Christmas inventories.
