NEW YORK - Same-store sales rose 4.0% during the second week of May, according to the Johnson Redbook.
The discount sector's comps were up 4.2%, while the department store group saw a 3.5% lift.
"Some retailers said the pace of sales was uneven, slowing down in the middle of the week but picking up and finishing stronger into the weekend. Other retailers blamed the weather for the soft tone," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
She added: "Retailers are looking for an improvement in seasonal business as warmer weather, graduation season and the Memorial Day holiday draw closer."
